Trilok Gurtu's singular instrumental set-up and percussion style is among the most original in contemporary music. A respected solo artist with four decades of concert performing and several acclaimed recordings to his credit, Trilok's astute rhythmic sense has served as an essential ingredient to the ensembles of John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul, Oregon, and many other artistic elites. His bandmate Paolo Fresu is an impressive trumpet soloist and composer from Italy, known to American audiences for his stellar playing with composer Carla Bley's Lost Chords group and for leading his own excellent ensembles. On piano, Omar Sosa has established an international reputation for emotive, fiery virtuosity. Steadfastly dedicated to the folkloric roots of Cuban music, Sosa's harmonic structures and earthy polyrhythms incorporate the best aspects of traditional and contemporary song forms to produce music that is at once innovative and accessible. As the GFS Trio, these three extraordinary artists exemplify the cross-cultural alliances becoming commonplace throughout the world of music.
