Intro to Block Printing Workshop

An express 3-hour, all-levels workshop focusing on transforming a drawing into your own carved block print. Make a set of your own block prints on 8”x10" paper for displaying and gifting!

Cost: $70.00

Registration: Must register in advance online at https://www.allhandsworkshops.com/events/2019/1/18/intro-to-block-printing

In this workshop, we will:
- learn how to transfer a drawing onto a softkut rubber block
- safely carve out the negative space of a drawing
- learn how to mix and roll ink onto your printing block
- pull 8”x10" prints from your relief blocks
- take home up to 7 sheets of 8”x10" paper (*feel free to bring your own color/type of paper if you want to make more)

The following supplies are included:
- Speedball Linoleum Cutting tools
- Speedball Rolling brayers
- water soluble printmaking ink in multiple colors
- Softkut 4”x6" rubber carving block
- 7 sheets of Strathmore printmaking paper in lightweight and heavyweight thickness (*feel free to bring your own color/type of paper if you want to make more)
- curated collection of images to assist with designing your print

You can bring:
- your own drawing or design (Having this already prepared will save time in the workshop so you can go straight to transferring your drawing onto the carving block. However, there will be a lot of examples and images to use for inspiration in the workshop.)
- an apron or clothes you don't mind getting water-soluble ink on
- short sleeves or sleeves that you can roll up

You will go home with:
- Softkut 4”x6" rubber carving block carved with your own design
- 7 custom printed 8”x10" art made by you!

All attendees will be entered into a raffle to win a Speedball Printmaking Starter Kit! In this express workshop we will be using soft rubber carving blocks. I will offer longer, in-depth linocut block printing workshops in the future. If interested, please let us know!

About Joan P Bogart

Joan Pranata Bogart is an illustrator and block printmaker who draws inspiration from nature - botanicals and wildlife. She has drawn for almost all of La Tourangelle's gourmet oil labels. It was after working at a tech company for 11 years that she switched gears to practice more art. She grew increasingly addicted to relief printmaking, mostly carving from linoleum and soft rubber surfaces as printing blocks, and finding a peaceful place for creativity and focus to intersect. Her recent prints resemble Indonesian Batik in design and form. She is thrilled to be a part of the Santa Cruz art community with access to nature and creativity. Joan has a BA in Art Practice from University of California, Berkeley and practices printmaking in her backyard art studio in Santa Cruz where she lives with her husband and three young kids.
